Burt, Iowa

The welcome sign that greets you on Highway 169 west of Burt includes the town’s motto, “The Little Town With the Big Heart and Helping Hand”.

Burt is located in the heart of Kossuth County and has about 600 people. Burt was established with the coming of the Northwestern Railroad in 1881. A hundred-year-old landmark in town is the big hotel first known as Peck’s Hotel. It is now owned by the Larsons and is located on the main street of town. For the youth of Burt there is a swimming pool, basketball court, three playground areas, a tennis court, baseball fields, and many community activities.

Burt’s largest employer is StateLine Cooperative which is a full service facility for farmers-from grain handling to agronomy and feed. Their main office is located in Burt and have many locations throughout Kossuth County and beyond (515) 924-3555. The Community is proud of their annual ‘Burt Summer Celebration’ that they host the second Saturday in July. The day starts with community garage sales then bag toss tournaments, street dance and ends with fireworks. Burt has several nice horseshoe courts. They have a shelter house with plenty of picnic tables and grills available for use. Since Burt is centrally located in Kossuth County they make a great meeting place for a large variety of events. The Burt Activity Complex has a large kitchen area, gymnasium and another large meeting area. The facility is completely air conditioned and can house a very large number of people.
